LWV of Wayland Speaker and Annual Meeting on May 29th at 3 pm

Join LWV of Wayland members on Thursday, May 29th at 3 pm in the Select Board Meeting Room at Wayland Town Hall! Our Annual Meeting will feature a discussion with Dr. David Fleishman, Superintendent of Wayland Public Schools.

Dr. Fleishman was selected as interim school superintendent in 2023 and school superintendent in November. He previously served as school superintendent of the Newton Public Schools for 12 years. The Wayland school budget of nearly $55,000,000 is more than half of the town’s operating budget of $107.9 million. If you no longer have children in the schools, you probably don’t hear much about our public schools. Perhaps you’ve read about the racist messages on the town pool. Is the enrollment declining? Have you heard about a possible new school? What about the mental health issues students seem to be experiencing after the Covid pandemic? And most recently how will the loss of federal funding for special education, school lunches, and immersion programs impact our schools and school libraries? Join us for a discussion on these topics.

The “business part” of the Annual Meeting will follow. The agenda is:

  • Call to Order, Welcome, Appoint Readers of the Minutes
  • Treasurer’s Report, Presentation of Proposed Budget: Karen Kavet
  • Suggestions for Upcoming Year, Including A Proposal to Disband (The suggestion to disband will be introduced, briefly discussed, and a future meeting held to explore options, and take a vote.)
  • Coordinating Committee Elections
  • Adjourn

LWV of Wayland Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 9 at 7 pm

Join other LWV of Wayland members on Zoom on Thursday, June 9 at 7 pm for our Annual Meeting! Our speaker will be Wayland resident Karen Montague who has been volunteering at the International Institute of New England (IINE) with other members of her church to help settle Afghan Refugees.  The agency has settled 500 Afghans so far and is expecting another 150.  (The agency is also receiving Ukrainian refugees now.  See more about IINE below.)  Karen cooks with the women each week despite the language barrier and collects items for the families’ homes.

The International Institute of New England is a United States non-profit organization serving immigrants, refugees, asylees, and other vulnerable populations in the Boston area.  Affiliate branches are located in Lowell, Massachusetts, and Manchester, New Hampshire. In 2017, the IINE assisted nearly 2,000 people from more than 60 different countries, including, but not limited to, Burma, Bhutan, Iraq, Somalia, Syria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The business part of the Annual Meeting will follow the presentation. The Zoom link will be sent to League members the week of the event. If you have any questions, please email info@lwvwayland.org.

LWV of Wayland Annual Meeting, June 21 at 7 pm

LWVW members are cordially invited to attend the League of Women Voters of Wayland Annual Meeting, which will take place via Zoom on Monday, June 21, at 7pm.  We are very pleased to have as our speakers Senator Rebecca Rausch and Town Clerk Anna Ludwig who will talk about once-a-decade changes they will oversee as a result of our population numbers revealed by the 2020 census.  Congressional districts have to be redrawn and the town may need to add an additional precinct.  How is this done?  Who oversees it?  When will it take affect?  Will there be public input?

Following the discussion, we will hold our required brief annual meeting.  For more information and for your Zoom invitation, please email info@lwvwayland.org!
